Screen Time & Sleep in Thane: What Research Shows
Thane residents losing 45 minutes of sleep nightly due to evening screen use. Local health data reveals how blue light affects melatonin production and restorative rest.
How we reported this
A 2025 Indian Council of Medical Research analysis found that residents in Thane who use phones or tablets within two hours of bedtime experience a 22 percent drop in melatonin production and report 45 fewer minutes of deep sleep on average.
The finding arrives as hybrid work patterns keep many Thane professionals online later, with traffic on Ghodbunder Road remaining heavy until 10 pm most weeknights and increasing the temptation to scroll in bed after commuting from Wagle Estate offices.
Thane Municipal Corporation’s wellness unit launched a six-week screen-curfew pilot last March at the Naupada Community Hall, where participants receive free blue-light filter kits and track sleep with wearable devices supplied by the city program; the same initiative now runs twice-weekly sessions at the Upvan Lake open-air pavilion on Sunday mornings.
Participants in the Naupada cohort logged an average 38-minute increase in total sleep time after four weeks, according to interim figures released by the corporation’s health department on 2 July 2026, while the Upvan group reported a 15 percent reduction in reported daytime fatigue on standard wellness questionnaires.
Local patterns and measured outcomes
Data collected from 1,240 Thane households between January and May 2026 showed that households within 500 metres of Thane railway station averaged 3.4 hours of evening screen time, the highest among surveyed neighbourhoods, compared with 2.1 hours in the quieter Pokhran Road II area.
Practical steps residents are testing
Wellness coaches at the Thane Municipal sessions recommend setting device alarms for 8:30 pm and switching to paper books or dimmed reading lamps; the city program also distributes printed sleep logs that cost participants nothing beyond a 200-rupee refundable deposit for the loaned wearables. Residents who complete the full six weeks receive a certificate and priority access to follow-up yoga classes held at the same Naupada and Upvan venues.
