Borivali Railway Station Installs Advanced Electronic Interlocking Systems

Borivali railway station has reached a significant milestone in its modernization journey, becoming the site of one of Mumbai's largest and most sophisticated Electronic Interlocking (EI) signaling systems. This infrastructure upgrade, which achieved full operational status by early 2026, marks a departure from the decades-old relay-based signaling methods that have historically guided train movements in the area. By transitioning to a state-of-the-art digital framework, the station is now positioned to facilitate smoother and safer passage for local commuters across its network.

Technology Behind the Signaling Upgrade

At the core of this transformation is the installation of the Siemens Westrace MK-II system. This technology allows for centralized control over 381 distinct train routes. The system manages 90 track points across seven lines, providing rail operators with a granular level of oversight previously unavailable at the station. Central to the operation of this new digital interface are dual 65-inch 8K digital screens. These displays provide real-time monitoring of train movements, allowing staff to visualize and respond to the complex flow of traffic passing through Borivali with greater accuracy.

Integrating Infrastructure with Urban Growth

The modernization of the signaling system is not an isolated project but is instead part of a broader, multi-layered approach to improving rail connectivity. A significant component driving this development is the construction of the fifth and sixth lines between Kandivali and Borivali, managed by Western Railway. This expansion, coupled with the signaling improvements, serves as a crucial element in the station's ongoing transition toward a 'smart' hub.

While Borivali is not officially designated as one of the 100 cities participating in the central government’s Smart Cities Mission-a program that concluded its primary phase on March 31, 2025-the station's signaling initiatives reflect a commitment to municipal smart infrastructure goals. By integrating these advanced systems, the project enhances the local transport utility, supporting the city's broader transit requirements.
