Borivali's Grassroots Sports Programs Struggle With Severe Facility Shortages

Borivali residents are seeing renewed focus on community sports facilities as plans for new complexes advance alongside ongoing challenges for young athletes. The BMC has outlined a multi-sport complex on a 53,886-sqm plot at Chikuwadi in Borivli West off SV Road, budgeted initially at Rs. 200 crore and set to include cricket, football, a 400m running track, swimming pools and indoor games.

Street-Level Practice Highlights Access Gaps

Hundreds of young skaters in Borivali West now train on public roads in Gorai after the prolonged closure of the Pavan Dham coaching facility. Parents have raised safety concerns about children practicing under streetlights and before sunrise on makeshift rinks. These conditions underscore the pressure on everyday sports participation in the neighbourhood.

Proposals Target Outdoor and Underprivileged Access

BJP MLA Gopal Shetty has proposed a separate 12-acre outdoor sports complex at Chikuwadi. The plan emphasises kabaddi, kho-kho, cycling, skating and rifle shooting specifically to promote sports among underprivileged children, and it awaits BMC clearance. A reserved public sports ground of approximately 48,000 sqm in Borivli, handed over in 2012 after transfer from MHADA ownership, is currently used as a parking facility by Witty International School. In Borivali East, the BMC has issued a notice ordering demolition of an unauthorised sports turf built by Sheth Gopalji Hemraj High School on its 30,000-square-foot playground.
