Thane Municipal Corporation Raises Water Tariffs for All Residential Households

The Thane Municipal Corporation has begun applying its revised water tariff policy, approved by the mayor in June. The changes cover all 115 administrative wards and apply to more than 280,000 metered residential connections.

The update follows publication of the corporation's 2026-27 budget documents, which list increased spending on pump station repairs and pipeline upgrades in zones such as Kalwa and Majiwada. Those documents state that current revenue no longer covers the listed maintenance items.

Changes to Resident Monthly Costs

Domestic users will move to new slab rates that combine water supply and sewerage components. A household consuming 12,000 litres per month will receive a bill calculated under the revised structure, with the corporation projecting an average addition of 95 rupees. Families in buildings constructed before 2010 may see further variation if shared meters require separate readings.

Policy analysts at local research groups point out that small commercial units operating from ground-floor residential premises must now maintain separate accounts to avoid combined billing. Shopkeepers near Thane station have begun registering for individual meters under the new rules.

The 2026-27 budget papers record an expected 1,850 crore rupees in water and sewerage collections. This figure funds the 42 specific pipeline and treatment projects listed in the annual works schedule.

Timeline for Rollout and Queries

The corporation has scheduled ward-level information sessions beginning 15 August. Residents can file meter disputes or request slab clarifications through the existing online portal or at their local ward office. The government says the policy will include a phased adjustment period ending in March 2027.
