Malad Infrastructure Renewal Policy Allocates Funds for Jobs and Transit Upgrades

Malad Mayor's office issued the 2026 Infrastructure Renewal Policy update on July 9, directing $52 million from the current fiscal year budget toward road widening and public transit expansions. The policy targets employment in construction trades and maintenance roles for city services. It applies directly to projects along the Malad River corridor and the eastern industrial district.
City Council approved the base allocation during its June 2026 session after reviewing the annual capital works plan. The update follows delays in federal matching grants that had slowed earlier transit bids. Local government records show the funds will flow through the Malad Public Works Department rather than new borrowing.
Workers living within five kilometres of the designated sites can apply through the city's existing job portal for positions that include paving crews and signal technicians. Transit riders on Route 14 and Route 22 will gain an extra morning departure once the new bus lanes open in 2027. Residents who use the Malad Community Health Centre will see extended parking capacity from an adjacent lot expansion included in the same package.
Budget Figures and Hiring Targets
The policy document lists 850 construction and maintenance positions projected across the two-year rollout, according to the Malad Economic Development Office quarterly report dated June 30. Of that total, 320 roles are earmarked for resurfacing contracts on 11 kilometres of arterial roads. The remaining funds cover upgrades to three bus depots and new traffic sensors at 14 intersections.
Procurement notices will be published on the city website beginning August 1. Bidders must demonstrate local hiring targets of at least 60 percent of their workforce. The Malad Transit Authority has already scheduled public information sessions at the downtown library on July 22 and July 29 to explain how service changes will affect schedules.
