The Malad Municipal Corporation adopted new ward boundaries last month that move one elected seat from coastal wards 7, 8 and 9 to the inland wards 14 and 15. The state delimitation panel completed its review in March after examining updated population counts from the 2021 census. Officials cited faster growth in multi-storey housing estates east of the highway as the main driver for the adjustment. The panel's final order lists the precise boundary lines along Malad Creek and the railway tracks.

Residents in the fishing hamlets around Aksa and Marve beaches will now vote in wards that stretch farther inland. Local advocates note this could shift council attention toward drainage upgrades in the new eastern sections rather than ongoing requests for jetty repairs and mangrove protection in the west. Daily commuters who rely on the number 271 bus route to reach jobs in Andheri may see fewer ward-level interventions on traffic bottlenecks at the highway junction.

Policy analysts say the single-seat reduction also changes how municipal budgets are allocated inside each ward. The corporation's 2025-26 budget paper shows ward-level discretionary funds total 1.8 crore rupees per seat. With one fewer seat in the western cluster, that pool drops by the same amount for projects such as footpath widening and street-light maintenance.
