Kurla Residents Demand Input on Green Space and Infrastructure Changes

Residents of Nehru Nagar in Kurla East have formed the Lok Chalwal citizen movement to oppose the repurposing of the defunct Mother Milk Dairy land for the Dharavi redevelopment project. They instead call for the 21-acre site to become a green space and recreation ground. Critics note that the Maharashtra government has not conducted public consultation on the redevelopment despite its effects on land reservations across multiple areas including this Kurla plot.

The absence of consultation means decisions on land use in Kurla proceed without direct input from affected communities. This affects daily access to open areas and recreation options for local families who currently rely on such spaces in their neighbourhood.

Concerns Over Road Works and Water Services

Kamgar Nagar residents protested the BMC's elevation of Nandikeshvar Mandir road, stating the work started without prior notice and could lead to drainage problems. Separately, the BMC advised Kurla residents in the L and S wards to boil and filter water for three to four days beginning July 23 because of reservoir repairs.

These developments connect to broader questions about how infrastructure and land decisions reach residents. Without earlier engagement, communities learn of changes only after projects begin or advisories are issued, altering routines around mobility, flooding risks and household water use.

Traffic Improvement Planning

The BMC held a high-level meeting on the Station Area Traffic Improvement Scheme for Kurla station. Architects are scheduled to present a layout proposal within a month. This process addresses decongestion at the station but remains separate from the land and road matters already raised by residents.

Next steps include continued local responses to the land proposal and the scheduled traffic layout presentation. The BMC has not announced further consultation timelines on the Mother Dairy site or related works.
