Kurla Municipal Corporation Freezes Service Fees for 2026-27 Fiscal Year

The Kurla Municipal Corporation approved a one-year freeze on increases to municipal service fees during its July 3 council meeting. The measure covers water supply, waste collection and property-related administrative charges for the 2026-27 fiscal year and applies to all residential properties within the corporation's jurisdiction.

The decision follows the release of the corporation's annual budget papers on July 1. Those documents noted that service fee collections are projected to remain at 2.8 billion rupees for the coming year, matching the prior period's total. National consumer price data released in late June showed a 4.2 percent rise in household costs over the past twelve months, prompting the corporation to hold local charges steady.

Monthly costs for typical Kurla homes

A standard two-bedroom apartment in Kurla currently pays 450 rupees monthly for water and 180 rupees for waste collection. Under the freeze those amounts will stay the same on bills issued from August 1 onward. Larger households in three-bedroom units, which pay 620 rupees for water, will also see no change. The corporation estimates that 142,000 residential connections fall under these categories.

Local planning department surveys from 2025 found that municipal service fees represent 8 percent of average monthly household spending in Kurla. The freeze keeps that share constant even as other expenses such as food and transport continue to rise. Residents who receive property tax notices in October will see administrative fees listed at the same amounts as in 2025.

Implementation begins with the August billing cycle. Corporation staff will send updated statements showing zero rate increases, and any overpayments already made for the new fiscal year will be credited automatically. The next review of service charges is scheduled for the 2027-28 budget process, which opens in May 2027.
