Malad's Shop Fronts Get Digital Upgrade This Week

Hundreds of duplicate and degraded images on public notice boards, property advertisement hoardings, and civic information panels across Malad West are being systematically replaced this week, as the local ward office under the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's P-North Ward accelerates a cleanup it quietly launched in late May 2026. The drive covers roughly 340 panels between Malad station's western exit and the S.V. Road stretch running south toward Kandivali.

The issue matters now because monsoon season, which arrived in Mumbai in the second week of June, has accelerated the deterioration of older printed panels. Waterlogged backing boards and peeling vinyl are producing what civic staff describe as "ghost image" duplication, where a second, ghost impression of an older advertisement bleeds through the replacement layer. Several panels on Marve Road and near the Infiniti Mall junction on New Link Road had become effectively unreadable by late June, drawing complaints from traders and residents alike.

What the Cleanup Covers, and Where

The P-North Ward has identified three priority zones for this week's replacement work. The first runs along Linking Road's Malad stretch between the Malad flyover and Orlem junction. The second covers the cluster of civic information boards outside Malad railway station's eastern concourse, where commuter footfall routinely exceeds 80,000 passengers on weekdays. The third zone takes in noticeboards outside the Malad Municipal Market on Jankalyan Nagar Road, where traders say out-of-date licensing information has been causing confusion since at least March.

The Malad Vyapari Sanghatna, a traders' association active across the Malad West commercial belt, has been pushing the ward office since April to address panels where duplicate property listing images, uploaded in error by private agencies to shared civic display systems, had made boards look cluttered and unprofessional. The association flagged at least 47 individual panels as priority cases in a written submission to the ward officer in the second week of April 2026.

Some of the duplication stems from a digitisation program rolled out between January and March this year, under which the BMC moved several static civic boards to a semi-digital hybrid format. Contractors uploading image assets to the new content management system inadvertently pushed multiple versions of the same image files, leaving boards displaying double or triple iterations of the same planning permission notices and property tax appeal announcements. One panel near Malad's Kasturba Road junction was reportedly showing the same Ward 97 zoning map four times across a single display surface.

Costs, Timeline, and What Residents Can Expect

Replacement of a standard 4-by-6-foot civic panel, including new vinyl printing and lamination, is running at approximately Rs 1,800 to Rs 2,200 per unit under the current municipal rate contract, according to the BMC's published tender schedule for Q1 FY2026-27. The P-North Ward has budgeted for 340 replacements in this phase, putting the outlay somewhere between Rs 6.1 lakh and Rs 7.5 lakh, a modest line item in the ward's annual maintenance allocation but one that traders say is overdue.

Work started Monday on the Malad station eastern concourse boards and is expected to finish there by Thursday evening. The Marve Road and New Link Road panels follow in the second half of the week, with the Malad Municipal Market boards, the most publicly visible cluster, scheduled for Saturday morning to avoid disrupting the market's peak trading hours.

Residents who spot panels still showing duplicate or outdated images after the weekend can log complaints through the BMC's 1916 helpline or via the MyBMC mobile application, referencing Ward P-North and the street address of the relevant board. The ward office has confirmed it will do a verification walkthrough the following week, likely July 13, before signing off on contractor payments. Anyone whose property abuts a panel flagged for replacement should expect minor footpath disruption during installation, usually no more than two hours per site.
