Borivali Residents Launch Grassroots Book Clubs From Borrowed Spaces
Residents in Borivali started book clubs and readings from spare rooms and borrowed spaces before any formal support arrived.

Three residents opened the first regular book club session in Borivali on 12 March 2024 inside a rented room above a pharmacy on S.V. Road.
The gatherings grew because participants wanted direct conversation after months of online-only exchanges that left many readers isolated. The same pattern appeared in other Mumbai suburbs, yet Borivali groups stayed small and neighborhood-based rather than moving to larger central venues.
From kitchen tables to fixed venues
The Borivali Readers Circle began when a retired school librarian and two software engineers cleared space in one apartment on Link Road for weekly meetings. They later moved sessions to the ground floor of the Borivali Cultural Hub on Gorai Road after the landlord offered the room at a reduced rate of 4,000 rupees per month. A second group, the Station Road Book Exchange, set up near Borivali railway station in late 2024 and now uses the back section of a stationery shop for its monthly readings.
Both groups keep membership lists that show steady increases. The Readers Circle recorded 48 active members by June 2025, each paying 300 rupees for a six-month card that covers tea and printed discussion sheets. The Station Road group reached 65 members after adding a children’s slot on Saturday mornings.
Next steps for new readers
The Readers Circle holds its next open session on 18 July at 7 p.m. at the Gorai Road address. Walk-ins are accepted if space remains, and the Station Road group posts its schedule on a notice board outside the shop. New participants can bring any title published in the past five years.
